VAHS  2006-2007

I have asked my Congressional representative to inquire through official channels regarding the gross contradictions in assessing my performance formally and the allegations of the termination. This will take some time.

I think it is time for a new plan of attack!  As I have said in my blogs over this past month -- this is no longer about me -- this is about the community of Vilseck being force-fed whatever Mike Thompson and Duane Werner decide is in their best interests.

The clearest evidence of that is the absolute disregard for this year's graduating seniors in the Advanced Placement class I was teaching. Because the District Duo named above have personal goals that are not education related but instead are only education-impacting while their personal resumes are padded, Thirteen seniors -- bright, college-bound students -- will not be receiving their Advanced Placement credit this year without a certified Advanced Placement teacher in the Literature and Composition area.

Now, with the convenient reassignment of Mr. Sennett to Seoul High School in Korea, the scenario will proceed something like this: Mr. Werner slips neatly into the "Acting" Principal position. "Acting?" You bet! My guess is the rest of the school year will go by without him being officially appointed, then the summer will come and go, along with a certain percentage of the community population and in particular, this year's seniors.  When the new 07-08 school year approaches... well, it won't make much sense to change administrators then, will it?  Smooth as can be, Mr. Werner is in place and the history of how it came to be is nearly a year old. People have more important things to do with their lives than fight corruption in the schoolhouse. And who would expect that one might need to do so?

Then, except for the few individuals Mr. Werner singles out in his on-going purge of all that is not Wernderbar at VHS, the situation will appear under control and thoughtfully managed.  Indeed, much thought will have gone into the entire transition. I could be wrong, of course, the science here is sketchy and speculation about someone else's strategy demands the kind of psychic powers I have yet to develop. Anyone who doesn't like Mr. Werner's decisions will be referred to Mr. Thompson, who in turn, will refer you back to Mr. Werner. If only everyone could have a job with no accountability to anyone.

Let's keep with the military foundation the school is serving and go up the chain of command.  That means skipping over Mr. Thompson.  I'd skip over Diana Ohman as well -- the head of DODDS Europe. I sent her an email asking if she was aware of the shenanigans in Vilseck and didn't receive so much as the courtesy of a reply.  But, presuming I'm viewed as a disgruntled former employee, I didn't really expect a response. Still, one hopes for increases in ethical behavior the farther up the chain one explores.

It is time to call and email Dr. Tafoya. He is the head of DODDS world-wide. I don't know the man and haven't had any interactions with him, but based on his study of the tax-dollar boondoggled purchase of the DODDS database program to manage student information, he might be capable and inclined to unbiased communication and investigation.  There is the chance that his database investigation was triggered by an IG complaint, rather than a sense of duty toward problem solving. But, let's give the man a chance. I don't have access to the global address list anymore, but I think his email address might be: joe.tafoya@hq.dodea.edu or joseph.tafoya@hq.dodea.edu

I hope and encourage each of you as members of the community at large and Vilseck High School in particular, to attend the next Community Town Hall meeting where Mr. Thompson, Mr. Sennett, and Mr. Werner are expected to be present and demand they respond directly to your questions.  Please, do not let them tell you they cannot comment since this is a "personnel matter." I have put all of the documents I have from them on the World Wide Web. This is no longer a confidential matter. They will want to continue to hide behind that excuse. But I have given you the evidence needed to question and confront this injustice.

The reasons for my termination are stated in the termination letter which I have scanned in and posted just to the left of this box.  I have also posted my performance evaluations and a couple of other pertinent memos from my records in the interest of letting you make your own determination about my case and the bizarre behavior of the Vilseck High School Principal and Deputy Principal in firing me.

Please, don't let this insult to the community's right to determine what is best for everyone become the standard of behavior that is allowed to go unquestioned. This is the time and the place to become a part of a voice for ethical behavior, fairness, and honesty.

Best regards,
Storey

Diana Ohman Update

I received a reply from Ms. Ohman!
I emailed her on 30 December 2006 and I received a reply from her of 24 January 2007.

She says:
Ms. Smith,

There is no authority for me to intervene regarding your termination as a probationary employee with DoDDS.  All requirements regarding your termination were followed by the school and district.  I regret that you view your termination as unfair and inequitable.

Diana J. Ohman
Director, DoDDS-Europe

I don't know how to interpret that response.  She bases her answer on the legal "right" to fire me, which I have already agreed existed -- my point to her, which remains unaddressed -- is how to explain the contradiction between the termination allegations and the laudatory comments on my performance evaluations. Why can't the DODDS higher adminstration ask the VHS administrators to explain that?
